After World War Two, Japan signed treaties pledging to maintain an armed forces with only a defensive capability. Over the years, however, it has powerfully developed this capacity in reaction to the potential threats of the (now defunct) Soviet Union and North Korea. The Japanese Air Self-Defense Force has 44,000 men and 270 combat aircraft.
